San Jose Earthquakes beats Oakland Roots in their pre-season match

The San Jose Earthquakes played their announced final pre-season match before the opening match of next week’s MLS regular season on Friday, when they hosted the Oakland Roots team to expand their USL Championship in Paypal Park. While Auckland was leading, Quakes came back to win the match 3–2.

The San Jose squad to start the match was very strong, and he could argue he could be, or close to, the 11th in next week’s opening match against the Houston Dynamo.

The teams were pretty even in the first half. I think Earthquakes played slower than we usually see, but with the game taking place in the morning sun and being pre-season, they probably wanted to cool off a little in tune. Auckland forced some balls from JT Marcinkowski, but they missed San Jose over and over halfway through the half, although that didn’t help with earthquakes in the first half.

Auckland scored the first goal just before halftime, thanks to a penalty kick by Johnny Rodriguez. Then, just before the clock passed, Johannes Harish took second place from Roots to make it 2–0 for the visitors.

But San Jose was all the rest of the way. Immediately after the second goal, Matthias Almeida made three changes, and it turned out that they were important for earthquakes.

Chovis Lopez scored in the 76th minute to make it 2-1, and his sharp shot looked nice to the newcomer.

One minute later, Carlos Fierro got into the action to add a tie.

Then Cowell, who had a hat-trick in the last pre-season game of Earthquakes, scored the winning goal of that match, in the 84th minute. Cowell helped set up Fiero’s tally as well, so it was a nice change to the bench from the youngster.

Obviously there’s no disdain for Auckland but the Quakes should be ready for a higher level of competition next Friday, and even though they went 2-for-2 in their pre-season matches, another reminder that pre-scores in and of themselves are worthless. However, the team is preparing, and hopefully these adjustments have done their job for earthquakes as the season approaches.
