On 11/3, the museum displays updates of the nuclear weapons crisis to give a truer picture: the Asahi Shimbun

Futaba, Fukushima Prefecture – A museum dedicated to the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster got its own historical lesson when it was criticized that it failed to provide a complete picture of the Fukushima nuclear accident.

The Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum here has updated exhibits on insufficient precautions and poor responses after the triple collapse at Fukushima Nuclear Plant No. 1 caused by the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami.

Seventy photographs, paintings, and other art pieces were added in late March based on the opinions of provincial residents and media institutions.

“The new elements reflect the different voices we received,” said Takashi Kobayashi, deputy director of the museum. “We will continue to review our exhibitions and organize special shows.”

While no explanation has been provided about the flaws in the tsunami countermeasures, a description has been added about “the breakdown of the safety myth: a man-made catastrophe caused by failed measures,” citing reports by the Diet and investigation committees of the central government.

Another exhibit shows that county officials failed to use data from the Environmental Emergency Dose Information Prediction Information (SPEEDI) system to evacuate residents because most of the radiation level predictions received via email were deleted.

Without any orders from the central and provincial governments, municipal government officials had to decide for themselves whether to require residents to take iodine-stabilized tablets to reduce radiation exposure to the thyroid gland.

An explanation was added that the Fukushima governor and other officials did not order the administration of the proxy.

Details were also taken up to describe how 40 patients at Futaba Hospital in Okuma, Fukushima Prefecture, died during and after the evacuation by the end of March 2011.

Shinobu Goto, associate professor of environmental planning at Fukushima University, welcomed the update, saying, “Information about the failures was completely absent, but some explanations were included.”

The museum is expected to continue making improvements to tell visitors that the nuclear accident should never be repeated.

For example, Goto cited an exhibition about the fact that central government officials assumed the accident could be further exacerbated.

The Preservation Museum was opened in September to present lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake, Tsunami, and Fukushima nuclear accident. Futaba and Akuma host the disrupted nuclear plant.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history.
