Forum: The epidemic may spur widespread innovation, forum news and top stories

I read the article of Assistant Editor in Straits Times Vikram Khanna (Innovation in Coved Time 19, 22 April) with great interest.

As a person who volunteered immediately after the Great Hanshin earthquake in my city of Kobe in 1995, he suffered a commercial failure partly due to the Asian financial crisis, and saw how severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) affected travel and livelihoods very quickly, I agree that important innovations were born as a result Directly to those crises.

For example, the Kobe earthquake led to the development of cardboard beds that could be created immediately.

In fact, my life changed dramatically during these crises. I had to innovate as my environment suddenly changed, and I am here today because those crises forced me to withstand and think outside the box.

But compared to the crises I went through in the past, the absolute global scope of Covid-19 as well as how long it took and was expected to last would look qualitatively different.

This crisis is now a truly global pandemic. The Cuban earthquake affected the city and its surrounding areas, the Asian financial crisis felt mostly severe on a regional basis, and a SARS epidemic was limited in duration and scope.

In the current crisis, aside from those who provide basic services around the world, most people have had to stay indoors and have had a lot of time to think.

I feel that a larger group of people around the world who have this time in their hands will greatly stimulate greater innovation.

Moreover, we are all very connected now. It was great how I recently got a Zoom call with the Oxford Innovation Center and others, as well as multiple calls to people in India, Japan, and Singapore to collaborate on social impact projects and ways to deal with the coronavirus crisis.

So I feel that once all of this is stabilized, and in the same way with the innovations that we have already seen, we will witness the dawn of an era of massive innovation on multiple levels.

We must positively look forward to these innovations. These may include portable electronic devices that penetrate viruses and hanging around your neck; moving towards work entirely from home without visiting the office; or switching to subscription-based food services that deliver what you want regularly.

I hope everyone will think deeply, try new things and plan better times.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
