Lahore: Zebun Nisa Park built in the Mughal era almost disappeared but Chauburji Gate still maintains its cultural significance. The appearance of the building depicts the era to which it was associated and the Antiquities Department has again attempted to restore it in its original condition.

Chauburji is a beautiful building made of red stones near Multan Road, Lahore. The Chaoporgi Gate refurbishment is scheduled to be completed this year.

The building was the entrance to the most prominent and largest of the Mughal Gardens, which is attributed to Princess Zeba Nisa. There are four minarets 50 feet high at the historic city gate, so it was named Chapurgi.

It is believed that the garden spread from Nuan Kot to downtown Lahore from the north, but today there are no signs of it.

The former director of the Punjabi Department of Antiquities Afzal Khan said that the unique architecture in Choporje is a beautiful masterpiece of a mixture of Mughal and Islamic style.

The prestige of this historic building is due to its minarets, which are not matched by any other building on the subcontinent.

Historians believe that domes were also erected over these minarets, which disappear with time. But no evidence of it has been found in the memorial structure.

The red brick used in the monument indicates the Islamic style, which is used in many buildings in the subcontinent such as Lal Qila and Badshahi Mosque.

During the Mughal era, marble was used in many buildings, but the use of bricks in Chauburji illustrates its distinct position during that period.

The current building of Chauburji Gate and the surrounding park covers an area of ​​about three acres. The building, built in 1646, was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1843.

The earthquake destroyed its northwestern minaret, from which it collapsed. It was rebuilt and restored in the Mughal period.

Reconstruction of the historic building was completed by the Archeology Department in 1960. The Orange Line project is likely to damage this heritage building as well. However, experts stated that the building was preserved and began restoration and decoration.

The director of antiquities, Malik Maqsoud, said that the reconstruction of the historic building began two years ago.

Within the framework of the project, tiling works were carried out in various parts of the building and the broken bricks were replaced in several places.

The official said that 80% of the restoration work has been completed while the rest will be completed this year.

He said that the project will cost 44 million rupees and the place will be opened to the public after the completion of the work. PHA built a beautiful park near Chauburji Gate Building. Iron fences have been replaced by a border wall that drug addicts cannot enter the park.

The locals said that there is a need to preserve the historic building. Mohammed Najm said that the building had previously become a home for drug addicts. “We thought when we saw the condition of the building that no one cared about, but now we are happy that this building has been renovated,” he said.

A woman, Fatima Ahmed, said that her house is located nearby. “It looks great that the building was restored and decorated, especially since the family garden that was built here will benefit the locals,” she said.
