BMKG records a swarm of earthquakes at Samosir from January to April

TEMPO.CO, Bandung – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected more than 63 earthquakes from unknown sources from January 23 to April 20, 2021, in Samosir Regency, North Sumatra.

The agency recorded that the seismic activity sequences occurred in mostly small amounts at a very shallow depth. The strongest score was recorded at 3.9, which occurred on March 15 at a depth of five kilometers, while the weakest was recorded at 0.8 at a depth of 2 kilometers on April 19.

“Residents of Samosir felt the weak earthquake on the MMI II scale,” Dariono, the agency’s coordinator for earthquake and tsunami mitigation, said in a written statement on Wednesday, April 21, 2021.

Based on all the data collected, most of the earthquake sequences with a magnitude of less than 2.4 were recorded with a depth of less than 5 km. “It can be concluded that this series of earthquakes is classified as an earthquake swarm,” he said.

Daryono explained that the earthquake swarm is a series of earthquake activities of relatively small size and very high frequency of occurrence. It occurs for a relatively long time in a local area.

However, despite the small amount of seismic activity at Samosir, it occurred very intensely. For example, there were 8 earthquakes on April 4, 6 earthquakes on April 6, and 11 earthquakes on April 18.

He continued, saying that the seismic activity was not clearly felt by the population and was only recorded by the BMKG seismograph network. BMKG appealed to people not to panic and worry about the earthquake in the area.
