In his speech, he thanked the citizens for their patience and following the blocking instructions, but added that there is still a long way to go.

Mr Johnson said the UK was at the end of the first phase and would move on to its second phase soon, but people would not mind.

“In the long run I see the effects of the blockade as clearly as anyone else, so yes, I share your need,” he said.

“The risk of a second spike in losing control of the virus and reversing the rate of reproduction, which would lead to a new wave of death and disease, would also be recognized.”
