New tsunami maps show how water could reach Seattle, Everett and Tacoma after an earthquake

Bellingham, Olympia, Seattle, and Tacoma could see between six inches to 11 feet of water from the tsunami off the coast of Washington.

WASHINGTON, DC – Could a tsunami that starts miles off the coast of Washington make its way deeper into Puget Sound or the Hood Channel? New maps from the Washington Geological Survey show that it is not only likely but estimated by magnitude.

Portions of Bellingham Lowland can find themselves almost 11 feet underwater. The portion of the Snohomish River Delta between Everett and Marysville can reach nearly six feet and Harbor Island in Seattle can be submerged by nearly four feet of water.

Maps show slightly lower impacts south of the sound, with Tacoma harbor at three and a half feet, and lowland areas in Olympia could receive six inches.

The area with the worst inundation is Belver, at the tip of the Hood Channel, which can see depths of up to 14 feet.

“We’re doing everything we can from the Canadian border to Olympia,” said Christine Allen, the state’s chief hazard geologist.

She said it is the most comprehensive study yet of tsunami risk to inland waters from a magnitude 9 earthquake off the coast of Washington, another earthquake that occurred here 321 years ago, and scientists say it will happen again.

Allen said the new, more detailed flights on land that can better assess the shape of the beaches, and better information about the shape of the underwater land, have given them a clearer understanding of how high water can rise from multiple tsunamis.

Generally, it will take at least 2 hours for the waves to reach Bellingham, 2 hours and 40 minutes to reach Tacoma’s Starting Bay.

The speed of waves can reach three or four knots, which means depth isn’t the only problem: the force of water against buildings will also be an issue.
