A magnitude 6 earthquake hits the Indian state of Assam and destroys some buildings

GUHATI, India (Reuters) – A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the rugged northeastern state of Assam on Wednesday, causing cracks in the walls and floors of some buildings, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 34 km near the town of Dikyaguli, 140 km north of the main city of Guwahati.

“This earthquake was the biggest I can remember,” a city police official said. “First there was a big tremor, then another smaller one.” “We did not receive any distress calls, but people have run out of their homes.”

People poured onto the streets, fearing new tremors, and some said the quake left cracks in their homes.

“Our multi-storey apartment saw massive damage with collapsing ceilings and walls,” said Subham Hazarika, a businessman who lives in a luxury apartment in Guwahati. “Fortunately no one was injured.”

Strong tremors repeatedly hit other northeastern regions and the mountainous region bordering Bhutan.

“We have no reports of injuries, but we are seeing pictures and visuals of massive damage,” Health Minister Himanta Pessoa Sarma told Reuters.

Earlier, the European Mediterranean Seismic Center (EMSC) estimated the strength of the quake at 6.2.

One official, who requested anonymity, said disaster management officials in India were assessing reports of damage and losses.

“I pray for the well-being of everyone and urge everyone to stay alert,” Prime Minister Sarbananda Sunwal told Reuters TV partner ANI.
