SEATTLE – ShakeAlert earthquake early warning app will be launched in Washington and Oregon next week.

While the app cannot predict earthquakes, it gives seconds and sometimes minutes of warning before the vibration starts. A warning about seconds can be helpful – it gives you time to get away from bookcases or heavy lockers and time to find shelter under a sturdy entryway or office.

The technology has been in use for years in places like Mexico, California and Turkey and will officially launch in the Pacific Northwest on Tuesday, May 4.

The detection system works because earthquakes produce two types of waves: P-waves, or primary waves, blast at the speed of sound and are soon followed by slower and more harmful S-waves. Seismographs capture those P-waves and within a fraction of a second, they can send alerts via text, radio and television messages that an earthquake is coming.

App users will notice more the further away from the epicenter.

Geologists say that large earthquakes on our marine fault line called the Cascadia Subduction Zone occur roughly every 300 years. Some have estimated it to be a supergiant 9.0 on the Richter scale.

However, there has been no earthquake of this magnitude on this fault line in 320 years.
