A 3.7-magnitude earthquake hits survivors in Assam, the second earthquake in a single day

The National Center of Seismology said an earthquake measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale struck survivors in Assam early Monday, around 7 a.m.

“Earthquake magnitude: 3.0, occurred on 10-05-2021, 07:05:52 IST, latitude: 26.49 and long: 92.46, depth: 23 km, location: Nagun, Assam”, NCS tweet reporting the earthquake in the morning in Nagun .

This is the second earthquake to hit Assam in the day, with a 3.7-magnitude earthquake struck in the middle of the night.

Sonitpur in Assam recorded several tremors recently. Last month, about 10 earthquakes struck Suntpur in one day. One of the strongest earthquakes to hit Suntebor in the state was a magnitude 6.4 on the Richter scale.

On April 28, the entire northeastern region felt tremors of 6.4 on the Richter scale. The earthquake also struck parts of West Bengal state and the neighboring countries of Bhutan and Bangladesh.

Earlier reports said that three people were injured when the earthquake struck with the force of Dakyaguli near Tizpur, the headquarters of Suntpur district. No deaths were reported, according to news agency ANI.

Several central commanders came out with support and spoke to the then Prime Minister Sarbananda Sonowal assuring all the assistance needed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also assessed the situation.

Social media was witness to the impact of the earthquake, with pictures uploaded with broken walls, windows and walls showing cracks by users.

On the Assam earthquake, NCS said, “Historical instrument-recorded earthquake data (NCS catalog) reveals that the region is affected by medium to large earthquakes and the most notable events among them are the July 29, 1960, magnitude 6.0 earthquake in Assam.”

The region is very active from a seismic point of view and lies at the top of the seismic hazard zone V associated with collision tectonics. Here, the Indian plates descend under the Eurasian plate, according to the NCS.
