Coronavirus: Cuban doctors go to South Africa – BBC News
More than 200 Cuban doctors are due to arrive in South Africa to help fight the coronavirus.
Doctors were left on a plane carrying supplies from South Africa to the Caribbean island, the Pretoria embassy said.
There are 1,200 health workers sent to fight the Covid-19 war in 22 countries that have asked for help from the communist state.
Cuba is known for its medical diplomacy, although it has been undisputed.
The government of U.S. President Donald Trump has called on countries not to accept Cuban medical missions, accusing the country of medical exploitation. Havana has refused.
Cuba has recorded 1,337 cases of Covid-19 and 51 deaths, the largest proportion of the world’s population and doctors began preparing for the virus.
According to the Reuters news agency, it is renowned for its prevention and community-focused primary health care epidemics.
