A love story that has shocked the world – BBC News
When an African prince and a white classical director subordinate to Lloyd were married in 1948, it caused shocks in Britain and Africa. Seretse Khama met Ruth Williams while a student at Oxford University. After his studies, he allegedly went to the British protectorates of Bechuanaland (now Botswana) and married someone from his tribe, but his love affair with Williams changed everything. His family rejected him and he had to refuse his request for the Khama throne. The British government was put under pressure to express its condemnation and Khama was exiled from his homeland. He then became the first president of Botswana when it became an independent country. The witness spoke with his sister Ruth Williams about the love he had conquered for prejudice.
