Several people have not been counted after the eruption of a volcano hit a tourist destination in New Zealand, local police said.

Tourists were spotted on the edge of the White Island crater a few moments before the eruption.

“At this stage, we believe there were about 100 people on or around the island and some of them at this stage are unaccounted for,” New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said in a press conference.
