The president declares a state of emergency

President Paula May Weekes declared a state of emergency on the advice of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley as an additional measure to stop the spread of COVID-19.

A legal notice this morning advised to declare a state of emergency, which included a curfew from 9 pm to 5 am.

The text of Legal Notice No. 141 of 2021 is as follows:

Whereas it has been enacted by: (a) Section 8 (1) of the Constitution, that the President may from time to time issue a declaration declaring the existence of a state of public emergency; (B) Section 8 (2) (b) of the Constitution, that a proclamation made by the President under Section 8 (1) will not be effective unless it contains a declaration that the President is satisfied that a public emergency has arisen as a result of any earthquake, hurricane, or flood Or a fire, an outbreak of an epidemic, an infectious disease, or any other disaster, whether or not similar to the above:

Now, therefore, I, PAULA-MAE WEEKES, the President as mentioned above, in accordance with the powers granted to me under Section 8 (1) of the Constitution hereby declare – (a) I am convinced that a public emergency has arisen as the result of an outbreak of an infectious disease [2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)]; (B) The existence of a public emergency in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
