Trump-Putin press conference – BBC News
Vladimir Putin spoke first, saying he had made firm proposals to control weapons.
“As an international power, we have a special responsibility” in terms of international security, he said.
He said Russia believes it is necessary for the two countries to work together for nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation – and to avoid putting weapons into space.
Donald Trump continued to defend the decision to hold a meeting with Vladimir Putin, which has been widely criticized.
“Even in the tensions of the Cold War … the US and Russia were able to maintain a strong dialogue,” the reporter said.
“But our relationship has never been worse than ever. However, that changed about four hours ago.”
He added that “nothing is easier than denying politics” and that this would calm “criticism, the media” and the opposition.
But he said he would rather take the risk.
“As president, I will always put what is best for America and what is best for Americans,” Trump said.
