Geophysicist OU opens new frontiers with a recent study of earthquakes

Tulsa, Oklahoma – The University of Oklahoma has presented a recent study showing that fault lines in California may reveal more about our seismic activity.

In 2020, Dr. Jiang, a geophysicist who previously worked in California, joined the Department of Earth Sciences at OU.

He brought a wealth of knowledge from his research on the West Coast.

Dr. Jiang studied a magnitude 6 earthquake and aftershocks on the San Andreas fault using GPS sensors.

He hopes to better understand the natural and induced earthquakes in the country.

Jiang will focus on the use of Global Positioning System (GPS) sensors, which accurately monitor the earth’s movement.

“These understandings can really help us do a lot of things that can mitigate earthquake risks, such as improving aftershock predictions and improving our estimates of earthquake potential through real-time monitoring,” says Dr. Jiang.

His research has already created a greater understanding of induced or fracturing earthquakes, which has led to new practices and led to a decrease in induced seismic activity across the state.
