The rumble felt in Hampton Roads wasn’t an earthquake, USGS says

Portsmouth, Virginia (wavy) – There was no earthquake felt by some in the Hampton Roads area on Monday.

This is what scientists at the US Geological Survey know. But they are not sure exactly what it was.

A USGS spokesperson who spoke with WAVY said the bang, which was reported around 11 a.m., may have been related to the military. The US Geological Survey analysts were still looking into the matter on Monday afternoon.

WAVY viewers said they felt their homes shake, and it felt “like a gust of wind.” Reports spanned from Virginia Beach to York County.

Acoustic booms from jet aircraft have been known to produce shock waves that can feel as if the ground is shaking. At this time, the military did not admit that there had been a boom on Monday.

The last sonic explosion felt in the area was a little over a year ago. It came from military aircraft conducting routine flying operations off the coast of Virginia.
