Minute Mayor with Andy Burke in Chattanooga, Tennessee

There is a story in my faith that may be familiar to many of you too. The story is about the Prophet Elijah, who fled from his enemies in a cave on the side of the mountain.

Then God comes to Elijah and says: Come here and you will find me. Elijah moves to the edge of the cave and witnesses huge winds, then an earthquake, then a big fire.

God was not in any of these things. Instead, he was in what came next – quiet yet Elijah knew: This is where God is.

In the past few weeks, I have been reminded of the great dedication of this community. We experienced our own form of fires and earthquakes, and certainly the wind.

However, we have found that Chattanooga is not in the storm. Our true character is in the constant voice that sends us to work when the storm passes.

When I say that the state of our city is strong, I say it because I know it is real. I grew up here, and spent my whole life here. There has never been a better time to live in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

However, the world-afflicted COVID-19 epidemic with one million infections has not gone unnoticed. Thirteen members of our community have lost their lives so far. At the moment, we are all trying to figure out what comes next, knowing that our health and pocket books depend on the choices we make now ..

I really think we won’t remember the time we stayed in our homes, as necessary – and it still is. I am convinced that we will remember what we did next. Did our city face these challenges and rebuild something new?

I see opportunities to invest our time and limited resources in projects that can make our city more fair, open, prosperous, and safe. Projects such as a plan to connect broadband nationwide, a renewed commitment to repair bridges, roads, and other critical infrastructure in our country, giving new skills to displaced workers so they can compete in tomorrow’s industries, and perhaps most importantly – more investment in more housing that makes these jobs Closer to more families.

On our agenda most of the curve settlement. We must get ahead of it. It is our responsibility to prepare for recovery while at the same time helping people transcend the current consequences.

To remember Elijah. How normal to feel running away and hiding. How, in the midst of a great experience, the temptation must have been strong to say, I just want to live my life here, on a mountain, by myself.

Our future is not in the storm. It is not in the closed door. Our future, if we are brave enough to listen, it is a small still voice sending us to work when the storm passes, and that’s what our city has done for decades, and what we are called to do next.
