While extremist Sunni militants continue to make territorial gains in Iraq, many of the female soldiers and women who served in the country are shocked by the events that are taking place.

For some veterans, while it is highly recommended to watch in the sectarian chaos of Iraq, it is not a surprise. Since 2006, it has been in the hands of the Sunni militia to seize power, and in recent years has gained territory in Syria and Iraq.

What many veterans say is a deeper internal struggle: how have the recent events in Iraq changed the way we seek their service? All things considered, was it worth it?

The BBC spoke with two Iraq War veterans, Elliot Ackerman and Dario DiBattista, to reflect on the conflict in recent years through the lens of their experiences.
