The death of a young Egyptian director for directing a music video criticizing President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo prison

Shadi Habash, 24, died in Tora prison, according to lawyer Ahmed Al-Khawaja, who was unable to determine the cause of death.

“His health deteriorated for several days … He was admitted to the hospital and then returned to prison yesterday evening, where he died at night,” he told AFP, without elaborating.

Habash was arrested in March 2018, for “spreading false news” and “belonging to an illegal organization,” according to the prosecution.

He was arrested after rock singer Ramy Essam released the song “Balaha”.

Lyrics of the song “Balaha” – a name his detractors gave to Sisi in reference to a character in an Egyptian movie known to be a notorious liar.

Essam gained popularity during the popular revolution against former President Hosni Mubarak in early 2011. Since then he has gone into exile in Sweden.

The video gained over five million views on YouTube.

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) says in a post on Twitter that Habash died as a result of “negligence and the absence of justice”.

Human rights groups have regularly highlighted poor prison conditions in Egypt.

Since the beginning of March, due to the pandemic of a new coronavirus, the authorities have suspended their visits and the work of the courts, further isolating the detainees.

“Because of the measures taken against the coronavirus, no one has been able to see it,” says Khawaja.

Habbash himself warned of his dilemma in October, in a message published today by activist Hadaf Soueif on Facebook.

“It is not the prison that kills, it is the unit that kills … I die slowly every day,” he wrote.

Fearful of the virus spreading in overcrowded prisons, human rights defenders called for the release of political prisoners and detainees awaiting trial.

According to several NGOs, the number of detainees in Egypt is estimated at 60,000 political prisoners, including secular activists, journalists, lawyers, academics, and Islamists who have been arrested in a continuous crackdown against the opposition since the Islamist president in 2013 ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.
