The largest earthquake in the swarm was felt across Imperial County, San Diego, and parts of the Inland Empire. The US Geological Survey said some people as far away as Los Angeles felt it.

“The Imperial County Fire Department and Office of Emergency Services are currently monitoring an assessment of recent earthquake activity in our region,” said a tweet on the Imperial County Twitter account on Saturday. “There have been no reports of damage yet and our crews are conducting assessments of damage.”

The earthquake swarm appears to have hit the southern end of the Brawley Seismic Zone, a seismically active region where tectonic plates move away from each other. The area experiences regular seismic activity including swarms of hundreds of earthquakes. The Brawley Seismic Zone is particularly important to monitor because it is the region that connects the San Andreas Fault and the Empire, both of which can cause devastating earthquakes.

“Earthquakes in Imperial Valley often come in swarms. They last until they stop,” seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones said on Twitter. “An earthquake that is potentially bigger than always could be caused by any earthquake. It happens 5% of the time.”

She added that the earthquake appears to have been along the Westmoreland fault.

A 5.2-magnitude earthquake was reported at 10:55 a.m. PT nine miles from Brawley.

There were dozens of aftershocks, including several measuring 4.0 and above.

The earthquake occurred 18 miles from Imperial, 22 miles from El Centro, 30 miles from Calexico and 45 miles from Coachella, California.

In the past 10 days, there have been 11 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 or greater centered nearby.

An average of five earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 to 6.0 occur per year in California and Nevada, according to a recent three-year data sample.
