More than 150 earthquakes shook the California-Mexico border, the largest of which recorded 5.3| The world and the nation

More than 150 small earthquakes were recorded Saturday in a rural area near the Salton Sea in southern California, with the largest of them having a magnitude of 5.3, a USGS seismologist told CNN.

“There were 152 earthquakes by all measures,” said seismologist Paul Caruso, speaking by phone from Golden, Colorado.

Caruso said the area is not densely populated and has been known to have had “swarms in the past”.

CNN crew in Orange County said they did not feel any of the earthquakes.

The USGS map shows that the earthquakes, ranging between 2.5 and 5.3 degrees, occurred in Calipatria, just south of the Salton Sea along the San Andreas Fault.

Calipatria is located about 30 miles north of the Mexican border and about 140 miles east of San Diego.

Two 5.9-magnitude earthquakes struck the Pacific Ocean about 89 and 98 miles west of the coastal city of Gold Beach, Oregon, just after 1 a.m. Pacific time on Friday, the US Geological Survey said.

At least four earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.9 to 5.9 have occurred in that area in the past few hours, according to the USGS.
