How can we have a seismic effect on the ripples that emerge outside of us?

Posted by Gary B. Swanson

During the Easter holidays, Adventist ReviewOnline celebrated while you are the resurrection of Jesus together. But as you know, this was far from the end of the story. AR now offers you a special series of articles online to enable our thinking of the 50-day period preceding the resurrection of Christ to the glorious day of Pentecost, when his followers received a dramatic baptism of Jesus’ own promise. Holy Spirit. This survey enabled a handful of men and women to take the Bible to their entire world in one generation. May you be inspired as you read. Editors.

When I was almost in seventh grade in Campbell, California, we thought the best place for a field trip was Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, about 45 minutes’ drive away. There we can visit the Steinhart Aquarium and the Kimball Museum of Natural History.

San Francisco is famous for earthquakes. The 1906 earthquake destroyed most of the city at that time. The 1989 earthquake actually cut the World Series in the Menorah Park before the start of the third match.

For me, the most interesting exhibit at the Kimball Natural History Museum was the seismograph that recorded the earthquakes. It is displayed in a closed glass box the size of the phone box (remember the phone booth?). Most of the time, a needle moved imperceptibly in a straight line along a strip of paper, something like a heart monitor without any beats. The earthquake will shake the needle up and down and cuts off the straight line.

One day, the rest of my class moved to something else. But I kept watching myself a seismograph. I wondered how sensitive this tool is.

I looked around. I haven’t seen anyone else at the moment. It stood six feet from the seismograph. Then I jumped and pitched with all my weight on the marble floor as hard as I could. There I then created my personal earthquake. He might have measured 0.01 on the Richter scale, but it was clear there.

At first I thought for a moment jumping up and down again. After all, isn’t the scientific method all about copying data? But I am not a scientist in any way fantasy. This scared me. I wondered what would happen to me if scientists discovered that the 1957 San Francisco earthquake was just a kid jumping up and down the museum. I walked carelessly as best I could.

Without knowing it at the time, I caused what earthquake scientists call an “industrial earthquake.” This type of tremor is usually caused by human activity. It is not the actual geological displacement of tectonic plates deep in the Earth. It is not entirely unusual.

The goal that rocked Mexico

A similar thing – a seismic seismic thing – happened in a previous match during the 2018 World Cup. Mexico faced Germany in its first match at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Germany has been the strong champion in power four years ago. It was a home and away match without a goal until the 35th minute. Then Mexico striker Herving Lozano, who played in the First World Cup, scored a goal against Germany. This goal proved sufficient to win the match.

22-year-old Lozano was interviewed after the match. He said: “I don’t know if this is the biggest victory in history, but it is definitely one of the biggest victory.”

Soccer fans in Mexico may have probably agreed with the zeal of earthquakes – literally. Seismologists noticed a small earthquake in Mexico City at the very moment Lozano scored its goal across the world. The scientists explained that the “artificial” earthquake may have been caused by a “collective jump” of fans!

These fans in Mexico did not doubt that their team’s enthusiasm would have a seismic effect. But it’s a good example of how a common human’s passion for an issue can even affect history – both materially and casually.

The world turned upside down

An inspiring example of this is recorded in the book of Acts of the Apostles.

During Paul’s second missionary journey, the Apostles Paul and Silas brought the story of Jesus Christ to the city of Thessalonica. People were transformed from all walks of life: the Jews and the Greeks and “a few prominent women” (Acts 4: 17). In fact, Paul’s service and Silas caused a confrontation with some of the city’s Jews. The Bible says: “They dragged Jason and some brothers to the city’s rulers, and shouted,“ Those who turned the world upside down also came here ”(Verse 6, NKJV). 1

Well, of course, it is clear that the apostles in the early church who turned the world upside down were not literal. But it certainly was an effect other than the world. In human terms, it was a turning point. The history of mankind has changed since those first few years after Jesus ascended to heaven.

Many historians believe that the three most important decades in world history occurred when a small group of men was present. . . Under the authority of the Holy Spirit he took the gospel to the world. ”2 In the spiritual sense, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, their influence was spiritual and historical seismic.

We read and studied the Bible until we changed. “The whole book is sanctified by God’s inspiration, and profitable for creed, reprimand, correction, and teaching righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16, Nokf).

If this was a guiding motivation for studying the Acts of the Apostles, what would “inspiration” be drawn from? Should we not ask ourselves, “In what way can we turn the world upside down? How do we cause our sectarian earthquake? How can we have a seismic effect on the ripples that emerge outside of us? Do we cause any ripples at all? Can we be the center of the earthquake? , Even if it is only “2.0” on the Richter scale, and the service and testimony of the people who live around us?
