Rockets rookie Jay Sein Tate knows all about grinding

HOUSTON – A broken finger, earthquake, and COVID-19 pandemic: Three barriers in successive seasons for Houston Rockets forward Jessian Tate have kept the talented player out of the NBA.

After being out of business in 2018, Tate spent the season in Belgium, where an Ohio kid who hadn’t left his home state for more than two weeks traveled to 18 countries a year. He said he loved the experience.

The following season, after an earthquake slowed his NBA summer league rise, Tate made the decision to play in the NBA in Australia. That year, the league was welcoming high school stars RJ Hampton and the LaMelo Ball, and drawing scouts.

With the short season, Tate could put himself on the map, then return to the States and that’s exactly what happened. Tate did First-Team All-NBL, then returned to the United States. But it has slowed again due to COVID-19.

His fourth attempt worked: Tate signed a two-year contract with the Rockets ahead of the 2020-21 season.

Tate more than fulfilled his contract, leading the Rockets in matches played, matches started, and a host of other stats. The rookie player played well enough to lead the team in an intermittent period, the statistic that determines the effect when a player is on the field versus off the field. Tate’s +8.6 was the best on the team, which means the Rockets are 8.6 points better with Tate on the field.

He finished the season averaging 11.3 points per game, 5.3 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists per game.

Tate said his offensive numbers, along with his success in his defensive responsibilities make him a viable player with First Team All-Rookie.
