High earthquake risk on West Coast Regional Council building

A report about the danger of the West Coast Regional Council headquarters collapsing in an earthquake may cause employees to eat lunch in their offices.

They have a “D” rating.

This is the second lowest rating – and the dining room was identified as the most dangerous part of the building.

The building was originally a restaurant and nightclub, and has been in existence since the mid-1980s.

The engineering report gave it a seismic rating of less than 34 percent of the new building standard.

“Grade D buildings present a life safety risk to building occupants 10 to 25 times greater than would be expected for a new building, indicating a higher earthquake risk,” the report stated.

The northern extension had a 55 percent safer rating for its wood-framed walls and 75 percent for its steel-framed gates.

But the dining room caused the overall rating to drop.

The engineers said the dining room wall was described as a serious structural weakness that could lead to a catastrophic collapse.

“It is desirable to strengthen earthquake-prone buildings to be as close as reasonably practicable to a new building, but as a minimum, seismic improvements must achieve at least 67 percent of the new building standards,” the report said.

The council agreed that Eliot Sinclair should do more work to raise the dining room wall to 34 percent of new building standards and investigate the cost of raising it to 67 percent.
