Korean-Japanese historian Kang Deok-sang dies at 89: The DONG-A ILBO

Kang Deok-sang, a former professor at Hitotsubashi University (photo) and a Korean-Japanese nationalist historian who revealed the truth about the massacre of Koreans by Japanese military police during the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, died Saturday in a Tokyo hostel. He was 89 years old.

Professor Kang argued that the “massacre of Koreans after the Kanto earthquake was a heinous crime committed by the state and citizens alike” based on classified documents, memoirs of senior officials, and testimonies of military police and citizens he has collected since the 1960s.

He has written more than 30 journals, beginning with the reference book “The Great Kanto Earthquake and the Koreans” in 1964. It is estimated that this book created the impetus for the massacre to be included in the textbook in the 1990s.

He also studied modern Korean history including Yeo Woon-Hyeong and the March 1st movement. He chose Lee Dong-hui, Hong Beom-do, Ahn Chang-ho, and Yoo Won-hyung as the most cited people in the Independent Movement documents in Japan and published a critical autobiography of Liu Won-hyung in 2002.

Born in Hamyang, South Gyeongsang Province, in 1932, he moved to Tokyo two years later. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from Waseda University and his doctorate in eastern history from Meiji University. He gained attention as the first Korean-Japanese professor at a national university when he was appointed as professor of sociology at Hitotsubashi University in 1989. He took the position as the first head of the South Korean History Museum in 2005 and held the “Comfort Women’s Exhibition” in 2014.
