Scientists have determined that a massive earthquake occurs every 100 years on average in California. The last time a major earthquake—like the 7.8 magnitude quake, stuff of nightmares—was the last time one of those nightmares struck Southern California about 164 years ago. At the time, Los Angeles had a population of just over 4,000 people.

The metro area is now more than 12 million.

So to train us on dealing with earthquake anxiety, today we’re meeting with Los Angeles Times reporters Rong-Gong Lin 2, Rosanna Shea and Alex Wigglesworth, who cover bushfires, the coast, and of course earthquakes.
