4.2 magnitude earthquake hits southern Israel; No damage reported
A light earthquake shook towns in southern Israel on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and echoes were felt as far north as Jerusalem.
The earthquake was measured at 4.2 on the Richter scale. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage
The Israeli Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was 68 kilometers north of Eilat, and the strongest echo was felt in Eilat, Beersheba, Yeruham and Arafa.
The last reported earthquake occurred in Israel in January. It originated in Cyrpus and is measured at 4.1 on the Richter scale.
Israel is located along the Syrian-African Rift, a fissure in the earth’s crust running along the border separating Israel and Jordan, and is part of the Great Rift Valley, which extends from northern Syria to Mozambique.

The last major earthquake to hit the region was in 1927 – a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that killed 500 people and injured 700 more.
In a report published last December, researchers from Tel Aviv University warned that a major earthquake, large enough to cause hundreds of deaths, is expected to hit the country in the coming years.
Researchers estimate that the earthquake will have a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale, which is enough to destroy poorly constructed buildings, damage even stronger ones, and be felt hundreds of kilometers away.
The study found that an earthquake of this size occurs in Israel, on average, every 130 to 150 years, but said there were occasions when the lull period was just a few decades.
