Leading Australian medical professionals have criticized Victoria's health minister for berating a doctor who went to work with symptoms of coronavirus, but she refuses to back down. On Sunday, the Australian Medical Association also demanded a unified national approach and guidelines for COVID-19 in order to prevent states from adopting their own policies. Dr. Chris Higgins, the father of singer Missy Higgins, tested positive for infection after treating more than 70 patients while having what he thought was a mild cold. He wants an apology from Jenny Mikakos for her comments on Saturday that she was "flabbergasted" by a flu-like doctor who had continued to treat patients. Dr. Higgins is still awaiting an apology. The president of the national association, Tony Bartone, said that Dr. Higgins had acted with informed clinical judgment to test himself even if he was not required to do so under the guidelines. "At the time of his return to Australia, the guidelines did not require that he be tested," said Dr. Bartone on Sunday. "When he passed the test, he still shouldn't have been tested, and indeed … these guidelines still don't require anyone returning from the United States to be tested." Ms. Mikakos should have congratulated Dr. Higgins for taking action instead, said Dr. Bartone. "I think an apology is appropriate in the circumstances," said Dr. Bartone. Dr. Higgins hesitated to swab because he didn't meet the test criteria but decided on Thursday to do one, not imagining it would be positive. "I believe you have taken advantage of a cheap opportunity for a political platform and would appreciate an apology," said Dr. Higgins online. Instead of apologizing, Ms. Mikakos said that everyone should prevent the spread of the virus. "We understand the pressure they (healthcare workers) can feel to report for work when they aren't feeling well," she said in a statement on Sunday.
