Public confidence in news in the UK, US, Brazil and India has apparently declined, according to a new report by the Reuters Institute published September 9th.
The study, conducted over three years and reviewing data collected from all four countries, found that while there is still a lot of mistrust in the media, the broader picture is more nuanced.
Dr Benjamin Toff, senior researcher at the Reuters Institute, told Euronews that “most people have selective trust in some news organizations, but not in others. And they should have it.”
“What we focus on in our report are the ways in which people decide what resources they do and do not trust, the large segment of people in each country we call ‘generally unreliable’ who no longer trust them or even “any of the 15 different news organizations we asked about,” Toff said.
But the Reuters Institute researcher added that groups that do not believe are not necessarily the most vocal critics of the news.
“Instead, they are much less interested and engaged with news as well as politics in general. They have less experience talking directly or getting to know a journalist, and they are less interested in getting involved in practices. editorials surrounding how news is produced, “he noted.
One of the report’s key findings found that while media transparency about how sources are selected or how news organizations make their money is important to most people, “generally distrust” will cost them less. attention when deciding which sources to trust.
The report also noted a high degree of distrust of news on social media platforms and messaging apps.
“In the UK, the percentage of people who trust the news on Facebook or WhatsApp was roughly the same as the percentage who said they trusted information from The Sun, which does not have exactly a great reputation when it comes to factual accuracy,” he added. Toff Me
“What’s interesting is that mostly these gaps in trust are run by people who do not use news platforms. These platforms probably affect trust in more subtle ways, as we also know that people have a hard time remembering the sources of the news they click “.
The institute hopes to work with news organizations in the future to test possible trust-building interventions.
