Kalen Schlatter scheduled to testify today in Tess Richey's murder trial
Kalen Schlatter is scheduled to testify in his own defense on Monday during his first degree murder trial in the death of Toronto woman Tess Richey.
For more than five weeks, the jury heard testimony from the 23-year-old Toronto man, whom the Crown alleged to have sexually assaulted and then strangled Richey, before leaving his body at the bottom of a cage. 39; exterior staircase in the city's gay village in 2017.
Schlatter pleaded not guilty to the death of the 22-year-old boy.
An accused is not required to testify for his own defense during a criminal trial. The onus is on the Crown to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, and some defendants are content with their lawyers trying to break through the Crown's evidence by cross-examining witnesses.
But other defendants decided to step up in witness to tell their side of the story to the jury and, in doing so, they opened up to cross-examination by the Crown.

In the days after the trial began in late January, Crown counsel Bev Richards and Jennifer Stanton produced a wide range of evidence.
The court heard that Schlatter's sperm was found on Richey's pants and that his saliva was inside his bra.
The jury also saw a video from the security camera of Schlatter and Richey together the night of his disappearance, including images of the couple walking together in an alley before Schlatter retired alone about 45 minutes later, returning in the direction from which they came.
The officer who reviewed the video told the court that he watched for at least two hours after that and saw no one else go to or from this area.

This is in addition to the testimony of two undercover police officers, who told the jury that Schlatter boasted about his prowess with women and spoke about the case against him while they were placed in cells next to him after his arrest in 2018.
Other evidence in prison came from Schlatter's former cellmate at the Toronto South Detention Center, who testified that Schlatter confessed to strangling Richey with a headscarf when she refused to Have sex with him a few hours after meeting them.
Defense attorneys have raised questions about a man in a hooded winter coat and a light pink trucker hat that also appears in some Richey area security videos was last seen.
