2 American troops killed in Iraq during an anti-IS mission

Two American soldiers were killed by enemy forces on Sunday during a mission to eliminate a mountainous bastion of the Islamic State, officials announced on Monday.

Troops, who were not identified by the unit or the service, had accompanied the Iraqi security forces "on a mission to eliminate an Islamic State terrorist stronghold in a mountainous region of north central Iraq, "said Operation Inherent Resolve officials in a press release.

No other information was immediately available.

This is the first deadly hostile incident for the US military this year in the fight against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. The last hostile U.S. military death while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve occurred on August 10, 2019, when a Marine Raider, Gunnery Sgt. Scott Koppenhafer, was killed alongside an American entrepreneur during a mission to find an Islamic State suspect in the Iraqi province of Nineveh.

Koppenhafer's death was later investigated as a possible friendly fire incident; but ultimately, defense ministry officials said no evidence has been found to support this possibility.

There are approximately 5,200 U.S. soldiers deployed to Iraq to support continued efforts to eliminate the remaining IS fighters in the country.
