In a year in which international student enrollment is declining in colleges nationwide and global mobility is severely disrupted, the University of Arizona is experiencing an unprecedented increase in international student enrollment.
Enrollment of international students in U.S. colleges and universities had been steadily increasing over the past decade. However, it dropped significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic from 1,095,299 in 2019 to 914,095 in 2021, according to Open Doors.Annual enrollment of international students report.
Opposing this national trend, the University of Arizona now has the largest number of international students enrolled in university history, with over 5,400 international students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs on the main campus and around the globe, according to university enrollment. autumn 2021.
“These numbers reflect a coordinated and holistic approach to global education that was a pillar of the universities’ strategic plan long before COVID,” said Urizona Vice President for Global Affairs and Dean of Global Education. Brent White. “This approach includes meeting students wherever they are and providing opportunities to earn a UArizona degree in their home country, on the main campus in Tucson, online or a combination of all three. Our global enrollment was growing before the pandemic and has accelerated. since then. then. “
Each year, thousands of students from more than 100 countries choose to earn their degrees on the University of Arizona’s main campus in Tucson. Included in the fall 2021 enrollment numbers are a total of 3,097 international students attending classes on the main campus, an increase of 3.2% compared to the fall 2020. The number of new international students enrolled on the main campus has increased by 65.9% compared to autumn 2020.
Total university international student enrollment also includes 2,073 students enrolled in UArizona programs outside the United States.
Providing education ‘wherever you are’
By creating new opportunities and modalities for students to earn a degree, stay on track, or start a new degree program, UArizona has made it possible for students to pursue higher education from anywhere in the world.
Of the UArizona students currently enrolled outside the US, 181 are following Global Direct Online degree paths. An option in the second year, these degree paths online make a U.S. degree accessible and affordable for students who cannot or do not want to travel to Arizona to study in person.
“The online degree options we have created are making a big difference for students who needed flexibility in these uncertain times,” he said. Stephanie Adamson, Assistant Dean of UArizona for Global Admissions and Registrations. “We are making sure that those students who need it can pursue their degree from their home country. We are really living up to our motto of international admissions: ‘Wherever you are.’
In addition to those students who choose the Global Direct Online degree paths, a record high 1,892 international students are currently enrolled in the Microcampus Dual Degree Programs, an increase of 400 compared to last year. In dual degree programs, students can earn dual degrees from UArizona and a partner university. This innovative model allows students to complete a US-accredited degree on a campus suitable for them.
The University of Arizona now has 13 microcamp locations around the world, with reputable partner universities in 11 different countries offering 37 different combinations of undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Students in dual degree programs on the microcamp campus network learn from UArizona professors, gain access to UArizona resources, and can spend a semester on the main campus in Tucson as part of their degree program through the Arizona Study experience.
Studying Arizona allows students to attend classes on the main campus of the University of Tucson and learn in person from the Arizona world-class faculty while having an American college experience.
Sebastian Montoya Huarachi, an UAZ senior, is a dual degree student at Eller College of Management, enrolled through the partner campus Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) in Lima, Peru.
Huarachi is one of 19 students from UPC who spend the fall 2021 semester in UArizona as part of the dual degree program.
“I feel grateful to be part of this group, learning from Eller’s prestigious faculty, participating in clubs and exchanging views and learning new perspectives,” Huarachi said. “Through the Arizona Study program, I learned a lot about other cultures, I met other international students, and I learned about American culture and new ways of doing things that I can apply in my direction.”
Silvana Lucia Sosaya Moreno, another UPC senior who spends her semester in UArizona, is pursuing a dual degree in sustainable architecture. Moreno said the diversity and cultural exchange between students and professors has been a culmination of her experience, with university faculty and friends from across the US and around the world making her feel welcome.
“What I value most about being here,” Moreno said, “is that it has allowed me to do more research than I’m used to, as well as the opportunity to understand another culture and adapt to a methodology of “teaching. I’m gaining a broader perspective of what I can do as a professional.”
Moreno said it had withdrawn from UArizona sustainability-focused offers.
“I believe in sustainability as an important value, especially for architecture,” Moreno said. “In Peru these kinds of programs have just started to develop or do not exist. The research I have done over the years in the program, my knowledge and the opportunities that have been presented to me make me believe that there is hope for a better future in construction and I’m happy to be a part of it for my planet and my country. “
When he returns to Peru in the spring, Moreno plans to continue to develop the personal connections he has established and build on the skills he is learning in UArizona.
“The University of Arizona’s main campus has long been an attractive destination for international students,” said Daniel Palm, UArizona’s associate vice president for global affairs. “We are building partnerships that will last, growing as a global top university and pursuing collaborations with institutions that share our vision. With the degree paths and options available through our worldwide network, our international student enrollment has potential. great to keep growing. “
Fall enrollment numbers include 97 international students who are unable to travel to the U.S. at this time and are enrolled in major campus courses from outside the U.S., an accommodation that was decided due to pandemic-related restrictions for some students in specific places and programs. There are currently 134 international students enrolled Arizona Online.
The international population of UArizona graduate students has grown, as has the university population. Enrollment of international graduate students for the first time has increased by 128% compared to autumn 2020. International students now make up 15% of the young graduate student population, compared to 7% at this time last year.
“For our global footprint to expand so rapidly last year represents a team effort and a tremendous amount of work on the part of our enrollment advisors and international student support teams,” Adamson said.
With a new website and a simplified application process, international admissions counselors who speak a collective 15 languages communicate daily with prospective undergraduate, graduate, and advanced students seeking degrees in all regions of the world.
The University of Arizona was recently named a The 100 best global universities by US News & World Report. UArizona was ranked 99th out of 1,750 institutions of higher education in 90 countries in the ranking of the Best Global Universities of 2022, published in October.
“We are committed to providing access and opportunities for higher education worldwide,” White said, “and look forward to continuing to expand our global offerings in the coming year.”
