Thousands without electricity while wet weather continues across Nova Scotia




More than 6,000 Nova Scotia Power customers were without electricity on Tuesday night after a windstorm and rain moved across the province, resulting in scattered outages.

As of 20:24 local time, the biggest outages were in Baddeck, River Bourgeois and Sydney, according to the Nova Scotia Power website. At the height of Tuesday morning’s outages, more than 12,000 customers were without electricity.

The company said it could be 23:00 before service resumes in some areas.

Victoria County in Cape Breton is in a state of emergency following flooding in the area on Tuesday.

The state of emergency was declared after 21:00

The county said residents are being asked to take shelter on site until further notice.

Several schools closed on Tuesday, including all schools at the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Education Center and the Strait Regional Center for Education. For a full list of school cancellations, please visit the CBC Storm Center.

Students at HM MacDonald Elementary School in Antigonish County had to stay at the school for several hours beyond a planned early departure because the road leading to the school had been washed on one side and flooded on the other.

Wet and windy weather moves through Nova Scotia

Wet and windy weather rolled in Nova Scotia on Tuesday. Antigonish County was one of the hardest hit areas with washed-out roads and floods. The floods led to the evacuation of a trailer park. 2:49

“We just wanted to keep the kids here and safe,” said director Jerome Stewart. “We only had one regular school day apart.”

The students were sent home starting at 2:20 p.m., and everyone was home by 3:00 p.m.

The storm was expected to move beyond Cape Breton and PEI, then to Newfoundland.

Road closures

More rain is coming

CBC Meteorologist Tina Simpkin said another 10 to 20 millimeters of rain was expected for the continent of Nova Scotia on Tuesday, with the exception of Pictou and Guysborough counties, where 30 to 50 millimeters were expected to fall. Another 50 to 70 millimeters of rain was forecast for Cape Breton.

Strong winds are also expected from the southeast with speeds up to 80 km / h with the possibility of bloating up to 100 km / h along the coast.

By Tuesday at 8:30 p.m., Environment Canada had effective rain warnings for all counties north of Pictou and Guysborough.

Wind warnings were also in place for Inverness County – south of Mabou, and Richmond, Victoria and Cape Breton counties, including Sydney.

Simpkin said the storms could mix with rain later in the day as temperatures drop.

Most flights were on time to Halifax Stanfield International Airport, with some cancellations. The flights were operating as planned at JA Douglas McCurdy Sydney Airport.

The Confederate Bridge was also open to all traffic.

Atlantic Marine, however, canceled Tuesday transfers to and from Newfoundland.

Halifax Regional Deputy Chief of Fire and Regional Emergencies Roy Hollett said no major damage was reported to the municipality after the storm.

“There were branches down, limbs down, some localized flooding, but, as of this morning, when I received updates from other units, nothing was reported as any significant concern,” Hollett said.
