As people stop to recognize the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the start of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, the focused engagement will take place at the beginning of the new year to provide a multi-year action plan. to tackle gender-based violence by the end of 2022.

“Sexual assault and gender-based violence remain a serious concern in BC and have devastating and long-term effects on survivors, their families and communities,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Advocate General. “We can not build safer communities and a stronger BC for all without facing such a widespread problem. “This action plan will serve as a guide to guide the government’s approach to tackling gender-based violence in a way that is comprehensive and effective.”

BC’s multi-annual, cross-sectoral, action plan on gender-based violence will build on ongoing initiatives and support the development of intergovernmental actions to address gender-based violence.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equality and the Minister of Public Security and the Advocate General share a mandate commitment to develop an action plan to end gender-based violence, including minimum standards for responding to sexual assaults, more police training , crown counselors and justice, and the creation of core funding for sexual assault centers.

“Gender-based violence occurs in communities of all kinds. It also happens at work, at school and at home, and remains very prevalent, ”said Grace Lore, Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equality. “Survivors deserve care and support, and future generations deserve a world free of violence. “For these reasons, we want to talk to people who are on the front lines, because we need to know where there are still gaps and where it is best to focus our priorities.”

The engagement will provide an opportunity for the government to talk to representatives from the anti-violence sector, indigenous partners, 2SLGBTQ +, IBPOC, migrants and immigrants, sex workers and disability advocates, among other case experts.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the global 16 Days of Activism and International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women campaign, the BC Society of Transitional Homes (BCSTH) wholeheartedly supports the province’s development of a gender-based violence action plan that you will raise awareness and create opportunities for discussion about the challenges and solutions to ending gender-based violence in BC, ”said Amy S. FitzGerald, Executive Director, BC Society of Tranition Houses. “COVID-19 has exacerbated all risk factors for violence against women, including increasing isolation, severity and the spread of violence. The end of the pandemic of gender-based violence dating back to COVID-19 will require transformational legal and social changes, and the coordinated grassroots services and BCSTH and its membership welcome the opportunity to set a new course through the Provincial action for a brighter future in all communities before Christ. ”

The action plan will guide future work across government, while building on the work being done to tackle gender-based violence.
