NASA tests the ability to protect the Earth from asteroids

NASA has begun a test of its capabilities to safely reverse the course of large asteroids like Apophis, which could one day pose a threat to Earth. This week, the agency launched the Asteroid Dual Redirection Test (or DART) to see if it could successfully change the orbit of a subplanetary body close to Earth. The mission is to execute a controlled collision of a small ship on an asteroid to “push” it into a different orbit.

The DART group has chosen a binary system of asteroids, targeting the asteroid Dimorphos (Greek for “two forms”), which revolves around the larger asteroid Didymos (Greek “twin”), with the aim of slightly changing the course of Dimorphos without touching Didymos anymore. big.

Twice a year, the Earth passes through the belt of Taurus asteroids. During this passage, observers on Earth witness the glorious spectacle of the Taurid meteor shower. But while most Taurid bodies are small and harmless, the belt also contains larger bodies that can pose a real threat to Earth. Earthquakes by bodies from this generation have been linked to extinction-level events in the past.

NASA has designed about 90% of the potentially dangerous bodies near Earth in our solar system. With a sufficient warning, NASA hopes it can push these bodies into safer orbits using the knowledge they will gain from the DART experiment.

The Pentagon is stepping up aid to combating food and housing insecurity among the ranks

According to aid organizations, about 160,000 members of the U.S. service are now struggling to feed their families. Newly registered staff are having the hardest time, with about a third struggling to cope with basic things like food and shelter. Overall, 14% of all active-duty military personnel suffer from food insecurity. Compare that to the 9.4% of adults in the overall U.S. population who reported having had malnutrition over the past week.

The problem is especially acute for service members located in high-income areas. During the pandemic, the price of renting out-of-base housing has risen steadily. This has left many young staff supporting a single-income family without affordable housing opportunities.

Last week, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says Pentagon will temporarily increase housing allowances for troops living in 50 high-cost areas across the country. In terms of legislation, the defense bill currently before Congress includes an increase in basic necessities allowances for service members.

Sudan: Protesters demand full restoration of civilian rule after the coup

Protesters in Khartoum, Sudan, are calling for a real return of civilian government after a military coup last month. After the initial unrest, the military leadership reinstated the country’s prime minister. However, the military leadership did not actually step aside. Instead, they have entered into a weak power-sharing situation with civilian government. Protesters say this is not enough and are demanding that the military fully restore civilian government.

Many of the civilian leaders arrested by the military last month remain in custody. The protesters are also skeptical of the civic leadership that has signed what many see as a purely cosmetic restoration of democracy.

Only in 2019 a popular uprising led to the overthrow of the longtime military dictator Omar Al-Bashir. During that revolution, elements of the army actually sided with the people. But the pro-Bashir factions still remain and the balance seems to have turned in their favor. Prior to 2019, Sudan had not had a civilian-led government since 1989, and even that was short-lived.
