Flight cancellations affect Charleston International Airport as winter weather hits the East Coast

CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) – As cold weather sweeps across the country, thousands of Americans are facing flight delays and impacts on travel plans after returning home from vacation.

Vacation trips and severe weather in early 2022 meant that 84% of nationwide flights were canceled from areas such as Chicago, Denver and Washington DC and some of those flights were scheduled to fly to Charleston International Airport.

As temperatures begin to drop, Storm Team 2 says the warmest weather we experienced during the rest of 2021 turned into harsh weather.

“The form of very strong winds and rain in which in many cases the colder air turned into snow. “It’s quite a snowstorm in places like the Mid-Atlantic from places like North Carolina to Virginia and even Pennsylvania,” says Storm 2 chief meteorologist Rob Fowler.

The change in weather caused strong winds of approximately 70 miles per hour in Folly Beach and a pier of the downtown Charleston apartment complex from construction to collapse on the street.

“It’s very wild, it was madness that happened right here. “I’m glad no one was hurt,” said John McLaughlin, a Foundry Point resident.

With storms and winds moving across the Atlantic, Storm Team 2 says it may take several days for flights to get back on track.

“We’re just trying to play with all the flights that were canceled or delayed as the storm moves south-south,” says Rob Fowler.
