Islamists bomb stones of International Women's Day protesters in Pakistan

Islamists in the Pakistani capital threw stones, shoes and other items on Sunday at people participating in International Women's Day marches.

The event, which was attended by men and women in Islamabad, was one of dozens held around the world to commemorate the cultural and political achievements of women.

The brigade of the Red Mosque, composed of conservative elements and a religious party affiliated to the Taliban, organized a counter-demonstration throughout the hall of the demonstrators, Reuters reported, citing Deputy District Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat.

Authorities have detained the Islamists while trying to attack the Women's Day protesters, said police chief Mazhar Niazi.

Some allegedly threw stones, bricks, sticks and shoes at the demonstrators. Niazi said no arrests have been made, but a criminal case is pending for those who broke the law.

Rallies have taken place in other cities of Pakistan, despite petitions filed in court to prevent them. The opposition was sparked in part by controversy over the slogan "My body, my choice", used during the march last year.

The rallies are notable in countries like Pakistan where women often do not feel safe in public places because of open harassment. Organizers of last year's event said they were threatened with murder and rape, Reuters reported.

"You know, whatever they do, they can't scare us," Anam Rathore, one of the organizers, told Reuters. "Their fear tactics will not work on us."
