MEPs call for 20% reduction in car emissions by 2025 | Automobile emissions
Lawmakers in the European Parliament have called for a faster reduction in car pollution to speed up the transition to electric vehicles in Europe.
Last year, the European Commission proposed ending new petrol or diesel cars by 2035, as part of its broad green agreement, the EU’s response to the climate crisis.
In a vote Wednesday, the European Parliament’s environmental committee backed the 2035 target, but said carmakers should meet a provisional target of a 20% reduction in carbon emissions by 2025 to accelerate the shift from gasoline and diesel.
In a crackdown on green activists, an amendment proposing a target for a 75% emission reduction by 2030 was rejected.
The vote is not final, but a crucial step forward in the negotiations between MEPs and ministers from the 27 EU member states.
Car manufacturers currently need to ensure that their average fleet of new cars emits no more than 95 grams of C02 per kilometer. The equivalent target for vans is 147 g CO2 / km. The European Parliament argued that carmakers need tougher short-term targets to reduce emissions to speed up the update of zero-emission vehicles. To this end, MEPs proposed provisional targets for 2025 and 2030. The Commission had proposed a 55% reduction for cars and 50% for vans by 2030.
Removing petrol and diesel cars is seen as an essential component in reducing transport pollution, the only economic sector where emissions have increased. Road transport accounts for 20% of EU greenhouse gas emissions and promotes toxic air pollution. Cars and vans are the single largest source of nitrogen dioxide pollution, regarding the deaths of 40,400 people in the EU per yearaccording to the European Environment Agency.
The car industry is also one of the EU’s largest employers, supporting 14.6 million direct and indirect jobs including manufacturing, sales and transport services. Proposals for tougher regulations are being closely monitored by EU governments.
To avoid economic hardship, MEPs have urged the EU executive to set up a special fund to help small and medium-sized firms dependent on the production of parts for internal combustion engine vehicles.
Pascal Canfin, the French MEP of the center that chairs the environment committee, told reporters before the vote that a fair transition fund of several billion euros would be needed. He said the amount was not large for the EU, but needed to support firms that faced a massive change in their business model.
The UK has promised to end sales of petrol and diesel cars by 2030, although hybrid models can still be produced by 2035, a significant concession for the car industry.
The EU regulation on CO2 and cars is one of a dozen proposals that make up the EU green agreement. Other elements include an expansion of renewable energy, a review of the EU emissions trading scheme that limits industrial pollution, and a much-criticized forest protection strategy. All legal proposals must be approved by the European Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers before they can enter into force, making the coming months a period of crisis for the green ambitions of the unions.
As a sign of political divisions over the EU’s green agenda, CO2 and car voting went through a left-liberal-green coalition with 46 votes in favor, while 40 lawmakers from the center-right and nationalist parties voted against and two abstained. . . The text will be voted on by the full European Parliament in June.
Activists urged the EU to set more demanding targets for reducing emissions to speed up the transition to electric vehicles by the end of the decade.
The EV boom will rock for the next 10 years if lawmakers do not intervene with a temporary target in 2027 and a more ambitious target in 2030, said Alex Keynes in Transport and Environment. Without it, Europe may not sell enough zero-emission cars to meet its 2030 targets, as well as those of many EU countries.
