EBAA launches STARS Sustainability Initiative at EBACE

In addition to the personal joining of the European business aviation community for the first time since 2019, EBACE 2022 is also marking the official launch of the new EBAA Aviation Responsibility and Sustainability Standards and Training (STARS) program.

Developed for more than four years, STARS aims to help support, train and certify business aviation companies across Europe – including aircraft operators, ground operators, maintenance facilities, financial companies and intermediaries – on internships. stable business.

EBAA Communications Manager Rman Kok noted that the program is one of the first flows from the association’s increased focus on promoting ideas from young professionals across business aviation, and in particular its participation in the Global Leaders Forum. young One Young World (OYW) since 2018.

“One Young World does a lot of work with the United Nations, focusing on public / private partnerships and how companies and corporate social responsibility play in the sustainability debate,” he explained. “STARS includes levels for environmental measures that can be taken at the company level, but also social issues such as diversity, inclusion and work-life balance. It is sustainability from a holistic perspective.”

STARS is modeled on the International Airport Strategy’s Global Sustainability Strategy (ACI) for airports worldwide, an accreditation program established as part of the aviation industry’s primary goal of net carbon emissions by 2050. The program is also based on this basis with specific criteria in line with the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) set of standards and practices for business aviation flight operations.

“We are bringing this program globally to IBAC, with a view to raising STARS to the same level as IS-BAO. [International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations] or IS-BAH [International Standard for Business Aircraft Handling] standards for flight operations, ”added Kok.

The 10 representatives that made up the EBAA’s first OYW delegation came back with the idea of what STARS would become, Kok said. “Next year ‘s delegation went through the same process and came up with the same idea entirely on their own. So we decided to put these two groups together and they’ve been working on it ever since.”

Self-certification program

Following a pilot program completed last year with six European business aviation companies, the EBAA will launch the first level of the program — a self-certification option — at an EBACE session this afternoon. “This will allow companies to develop an understanding of the program,” Kok said. The EBAA will share additional information about participating in the program, including details about higher levels, during the session.

The timing of the program coincides with an increasing focus on environmental impacts from the European aviation industry, especially as the European Commission stresses the need for more sustainable alternatives and a “green” recovery. from the Covid-19 pandemic throughout the transport sector of the region.

“The pandemic slowed progress towards sustainable innovation in terms of regulatory pressures, but everyone knew it would return as soon as we started flying again,” Kok said. “It simply came to our notice then [involved in STARS] work even harder. Remember, these are all volunteers working to make this happen. “They are doing this after their regular work and we did not want to overwhelm anyone.”

While environmental concerns are at the forefront of most sustainability discussions, Kok also stressed that STARS adopts a comprehensive definition of the term. “The discussion of sustainability has been rampant in Europe, especially in terms of aviation,” he said. “But we see our mission to foster sustainable growth for the industry, including from a career perspective.”

As a result, STARS “became an initiative that demonstrates how young people can make our industry better and help set the standard for sustainable business practices within the industry,” Kok added.

Another equally important goal of the program is to demonstrate the commitment of business aviation to innovation and environmental stewardship. “STARS was created by young and ambitious individuals,” he said. “It was not just a Shark Tank field; they are taking this from foundation to end with the support of the EBAA to recognized standards that can be applied globally.

“This is very powerful because it really shows how business aviation is not just a conservative industry that is reluctant to change,” Kok concluded. “We are young and we are driven, with ambitious talents to make our industry even better.”
