Diary Book: IMO Celebrates International Day for Women in the Navy

Diary Book is a weekly collection of stories of human interest related to the transportation industry. This week: The maritime industry celebrates its first International Women’s Day, the Leonards Express unveils the first of five patriotic trucks, and FedEx helps dairy banks send breast milk to combat formula deficiency.

IMO celebrates the 1st International Day for Women in the Navy

According to the International Transport Chamber, 1,647,500 seafarers work internationally on merchant ships. Surprisingly, only 2% of those sailors are female.

These statistics, along with women’s ability to empower communities, the role of gender equality in promoting economic growth, and women’s potential to lead in health, education, and anti-discrimination issues, were cited as reasons for the International Organization Maritime (IMO) to create an International Maritime Women’s Day.

The inaugural event took place on Wednesday, followed by an IMO virtual symposium that explored the need for more women in decision-making roles and leadership development for women at sea.

There is still a gender imbalance at sea, but times are changing. It is well known that maritime diversity benefits the entire sector. Women at sea are working everywhere to support the transition to a decarbonized, digitalized and more sustainable future. Let us take this opportunity to celebrate many women who are contributing to the future of the sea: maintaining an engine on a ship, running a company, drafting a contract, observing a ship, or chairing a committee meeting. IMO, said IMO Secretary General Kitack. Lim.

To address maritime labor inequality, the IMO is working to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality. IMO’s first step was to draft a resolution in 2019 to recognize and work towards a 50% women workforce, signed by the full assembly.

Last year, the IMO also adopted a resolution to make May 18 the International Day of Women in the Navy for global awareness of the issue.

IMO Web page now provides information on various scholarships for women and women in maritime associations, as well as more than 30 profiles of women in industry to help attract and retain more women in global shipping roles.

Leonards Express unveils patriotism-themed truck

Farmington, the New York-based truck company Leonards Express, unveiled its new patriotism-themed truck at its headquarters Wednesday to honor our country veterans just 12 days before Memorial Day.

The newly wrapped Air Force truck was given to company driver and Air Force veteran Keith Buchanan, who plans to use the truck for the next four to five years transporting goods from the company terminal in North Carolina.

We admire nearly 100 veteran drivers working for Leonards Express, said Tim Owens, the organization’s development director at Leonards Express. They are our boots on the ground. Their dexterity, maturity and character are truly remarkable. This program is one of the many ways we honor our veteran employees.

The truck company plans to deliver a total of five rolled trucks, one for a veteran driver at each of its terminals in Farmington, New York; New Castle, Delaware; Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Caldwell, Idaho; and Taylorsville, North Carolina, which was donated to Buchanan.

To be selected to drive this truck honoring my service and driving branch for the Leonards Express of which I am super proud is the most extraordinary honor. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I drive for the brand and love my country. I still display my Air Force pride and combining this with my passion for driving is a dream come true, said Buchanan, who plans to display the truck during Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day.

In addition to the gift of a rolled truck, for every mile that the five selected drivers travel over the next four to five years, or the life of the property, the Leonards Express will donate 1 cent to a veteran driver-selected charity. The company expects to donate over $ 25,000 throughout the life of the trucks.

At Leonards Express, our support for the community, employees and customers is essential to our culture, said CEO Ken Johnson. It defines us as a company and as a great place to work. We support our veteran employees wherever possible and recognize their sacrifices in the service of our country.

FedEx helps deliver breast milk in the absence of formula

As the country continues to face a shortage of milk formulas, mothers are turning to milk banks for help. These facilities pasteurize and store breast milk to serve babies who are in life-threatening situations, often born prematurely.

In a Washington Post article, Lindsay Groff, executive director of the North American Association of Human Milk Banks, which represents 28 dairy banks, described a 22% increase in demand for breast milk since 2020 and that bank groups distributed more than 9.2 million ounces. of milk in 2021.

Groff said banks over the past week alone have seen a 20% increase in demand for breast milk.

I suspect that while the despair continues the number may increase, she told the newspaper.

Reports of the same phenomenon are happening across the U.S. as dairy banks including Nurturing Expressions in West Seattle and the Mid-Atlantic Mothers Milk Bank in Pennsylvania report an increase in demand for vital food.

How do these donations work?

Mothers who have oversupply, often frozen, are subject to strict donor control. After passing the screening process, the milk banks contact the international carrier FedEx, which offers packages of gel and dry ice, keeping the milk sure up to 96 hours.
