Coronavirus: Qantas axes has the strangest flights until October

Qantas has canceled all international flights by the end of October, except those to New Zealand.
The news comes as the Australian government says its border would remain closed next year to slow the spread of coronavirus.
The Jetstar airline and subsidiary are now increasing domestic flights as travel restrictions are eased in Australia.
Qantas has seen the number of local travelers double to 64,000 this week, compared to 32,000 last week.
The country’s tourism minister has also encouraged Australians to take their holidays within this year.
With Australia’s borders set to stay closed for some time, we have canceled most international flights by the end of October, ”the airline said in a statement sent to the BBC.
“We still have some flights planned beyond Tasman in the coming months, with the expected travel bubble between Australia and New Zealand,” the statement continued, referring to the Tasman Sea between the two countries.
The airline commented on Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham’s comments on its announcement on Thursday.
Mr Birmingham said on Wednesday that the decision to close the country’s border was one of the main reasons Australia had been successful in fighting the spread of Covid-19 and that it would not reopen any time soon for general travel.
“I regret to think that in terms of open travel connected to tourists inside or outside Australia, this remains quite far away,” he told the National Press Club.
When asked if this would mean the border would remain closed until next year, Mr Birmingham said: “I think this is more likely to happen.”
Adding more flights
Qantas also reiterated that it will increase domestic flights to 15% of pre-coronavirus levels after some travel restrictions are lifted.

Qantas, like many other carriers, has been hit hard by travel restrictions placed around the world to combat the spread of coronavirus.
