Democrats hope the abortion decision stops them from slipping into the blue states

In New Mexico, I think that will answer [to with] a clear call for action by women and men, by voters across the spectrum who may have been more lethargic in the medium term, said New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, a former chairwoman of the Governors Association Democrats, which is ready for re-election this year.

Many are quick to point out that the long-term or even medium-term political effects of the Supreme Court decision remain unclear. And few Democrats are willing to say that only the Supreme Court ruling can change their dire political fate in some of the most contested country elections.

But a number of Democrats think a reversal of abortion policy in the states could limit an expanding battlefield, which has only become more favorable to Republicans as the mid-term deadlines approach.

For a long time, many voters did not believe there was a threat to the status quo’s legal access to abortion, said Marshall Cohen, DGA political director. Even in the blue states where there is protection in state law, the extremism of Republican candidates is uniquely detrimental to a wide range of voters, not only Democrats but also independents and moderate Republicans.

Democrats were offended shortly after Friday’s decision, widely branding Republican candidates as extremists who are not in line with popular opinion. They raised the specter of a nationwide ban something Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has said was possible as a reason why pro-democracy voters could not risk leaving the group now, even in credible blue states that have codified already in law the protection of abortion.

Even before deciding Friday, Democrats were using the Supreme Court’s close opinion in an attempt to create a distance between themselves and their Republican opponents.

Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Who last won re-election in 2016 by 18 points, came out with a TV commercial last week targeting her top Republican challenger. What is at stake in voting for carefully selected Senate Mitch McConnells candidate Tiffany Smiley? Everything, advertising broadcaster tonessaying it would jeopardize women’s reproductive health care.

The same is true in Colorado, where both Democratic Gov. Jared Polis and Democratic Sen. Michael Bennett could both face serious Republican challenges in November.

We can not let the court have the last word. If they do, our girls will have fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers, Bennet told POLITICO. We need to protect a woman’s right to make her own health care decisions, no matter where she lives. We must elect pro-election Democrats this November, who will defend a woman’s right to vote.

The urgency of the moment leaves a particularly bitter taste in the mouths of some Colorado Democrats. In 2014, Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.) Relentlessly focused his re-election campaign against Republican challenger Cory Gardner on reproductive rights so much that a debate moderator called him Mark Uterus on stage.

Udall eventually lost to Gardner, who voted to confirm all three appointments to Trump’s Supreme Court, which in turn created a 5-4 majority to overthrow Roe vs. Wade Friday. Democrats are confident that this year, Udall-style warnings will not go unnoticed.

Well, I think they are actually very different years. And I think when the prospect of overthrow Roe vs. Wade is out there, I think it ‘s easy for people to think, Oh, this is never going to happen, said Morgan Carroll, chairman of the Democratic Party of Colorado. But I think for a large part of the electorate, the current fact of overthrow Roe vs. Wade it is a very terrible and alarming wake-up call.

Laura Chapin, a Colorado-based Democrat strategist, noted the fact that voters in the state dropped a 2020 ban on most abortions in 22 weeks or later. The vote against the ballot mass passed before Biden, even holding seven Trump constituencies.

It tells us that we know voters in the state are strongly pro-abortion rights and that it crosses party lines, said Chapin, who is also a consultant for an abortion rights group in Colorado.

Colorado was also the first state in the country to release abortion laws, in 1967.

Republicans are not buying it, even on the margins of battle, Friday’s Supreme Court ruling will suddenly pave the way for Democrats to recover before the midterm elections. They argue that while it may be motivating for some democratic-based voters, the economy will still be the crucial issue in November.

In a statement, Joanna Rodriguez, a spokeswoman for the Association of Republican Governors, said in a statement about the 2022 midterm elections for abortion, no matter how hard Democrats try to convince themselves. Convinced voters who will determine the outcome in competitive races for governors are deeply concerned about the damage done to their financial security and personal security by Joe Bidens and Democratic governors failed policies on the economy, crime and the border.

And while many Republican candidates support restrictive abortion policies, even in more pro-blue states, this is not universally true. If Colorado Republican Joe ODea wins the Senate by-election, it would clash with the typical abortion policy in that race: ODea, a businessman, supports the right to an abortion in the first months of pregnancy.

Some Republican strategists also believe they can turn the tide on Democrats, describing them as extremists for pushing the boundaries of abortion rights.

But Democratic strategists plan to focus on the issue, both at the external borders of the battlefields and in the most competitive states. And they hope this can help rebuild some of the coalitions that were key to Bidens’ 2020 victory and their mid-term blue wave two years ago, especially in states that in recent history have been easy victories for them.

The hope is that yes, it stops the gradual shift, especially in the suburbs or among white youth, towards Republicans, said Roshni Nedungadi, a pollster at HIT Strategies who has worked with abortion rights groups. Young people really believe in the right to have access to abortion and did not believe that deer should have been reversed. These feelings are stronger in the blue states.

And Democrats also say they need to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time while still meeting voters’ concerns about other key issues, such as inflation or the economy more broadly, while also focusing on a broader agenda. reproductive health and women that does not revolve only around abortion.

Lujan Grisham, the governor of New Mexico, endorsed the Clinton mantra of safe, legal, and rare abortion. She listed a broader reproductive rights agenda such as access to contraception and sex education and a stronger social security network for families as issues Democrats should also discuss this year.

And Lujan Grisham also acknowledged that economic factors that made the political environment so conducive to Republicans in the first place could be difficult to overcome, even in states that have leaned toward Democrats recently.

I would like to have a crystal ball and tell you that of course this is now a political issue and will weigh more than economic issues, she said. Hard to say.

But the party hopes it can, at the very least, help restore things to the blues. If Republicans are trying to win on the Democratic front, said Jared Leopold, a former communications director at DGA, this deer the rule is like an electric fence, preventing them from moving forward.
