Happy National Doctor’s Day
July 1 is Doctor’s Day and this year’s theme is “Discover COVID-19 Mortality.” These Hyderabad health care professionals are under the spotlight like they never were before, during the time of the crown.
People preceded by fear of COVID-19
Fear of COVID-19 has a worse control in humans than the disease itself. The data show that 80 percent of people who have the virus are asymptomatic, 10-18 percent show mild to moderate symptoms, and about 2.5 percent are dying. However, due to the prevailing fear of the disease, many think they will die if they test positive. Even young people, who are not high-risk groups, start panicking. Until now, young people who died of COVID-19 had other health complications. Sometimes, fear translates into both altered and oximeter reading.
When we are afraid, we begin to breathe shallowly. Because of this, the lungs are filled with carbon dioxide and thus the instrument records low oxygen levels. High CO2 makes our lungs more susceptible to the virus. It is estimated that by December, 65 million people will be infected with the virus. The government cannot do much to stop the spread. The only thing we can do now is take precautionary measures and reduce the burden on patients in hospitals. This is why asymptomatic persons should not be tested. He will send them into a state of panic, exacerbating the situation.
It is also not true that all seniors are at risk. They are one of the most disciplined groups there who diligently take care of their health. They are more vulnerable only if they have other serious illnesses. If you have a house in your village, or a farm house, I recommend that you go to your family in such a place and isolate yourself for at least three months. Since work and education are digital now, you don’t need to stay in the city. The virus has given us the gift of our time with family, and we need to make the most of it.
– DR. MANOS KURIAKOSE, Dr. Manoj’s Homopathy
Long way to go
We still have a long way to go to reach the required infrastructure and facilities to address a pandemic of this magnitude. Developed countries are also battling the blast. Our city government hospitals were struggling even in the pre-coronary days, and the pandemic has made everything worse. Doctors are working all the time, and we need more health care professionals, because in addition to COVID cases, we need to provide treatment even in regular cases. As a gynecologist, I need to treat expectant mothers and also help in cases of COVID.
We have PPE suits, but the supply of masks is still not regular. Once, the costumes came without the shoe cover. One of the incidents in the last two months that left a mark on my mind was the washing of the petals by the Indian Air Force. I couldn’t bring myself to participate in it as this symbolic gesture does nothing to solve our problems. Another incident that bothered me was that of my colleague who was beaten by the relatives of a patient. When there is a dot on a white paper, people only see the dot and not the rest of the paper. We are treating hundreds of patients every day, and such hooliganism is completely unfounded for him. – Dr. K Deepthi, Resident Collage, Obstetrician and Gynecologist Gandhi Medical
Deprived of sleep, but will not give up
No country is prepared to fight COVID-19 pandemic. But public health infrastructure is much better in other countries than in India. We are in bad shape. It is tragic that despite the fact that everyone pays taxes, they do not receive facilities for public health care. Health care should be the right of every citizen in the country.
The number of patients affected by pandemics is increasing. When they are admitted to the hospital, we are the only envoys between them and the outside world, as they stay in isolation wards or in ICU cells. No one can visit them. We see them as lonely beings who contact their emotions. At the same time, I feel blessed to be in this profession despite the fact that the risk of exposure to this deadly disease is much higher for us as we are in direct contact with these patients. We do not sleep adequately and we have many other challenges, but despite all that is required of me to choose a career, I will always choose to be a doctor. The pleasure of seeing your patient recover is unparalleled and that’s what keeps me going.
– Dr. Nalini, pulmonologist, Continental Hospitals
I have been inspired by all the great doctors around the world
I feel like Hyderabad has a long way to go before it has world-class medical facilities. If you take our government hospitals, it’s only for those who can’t afford treatment in corporate hospitals. We lack the right manpower, technology, facilities and the right medicine. Over the last few months, at least two cases have really moved me. In one case, an elderly man was left in our hospital by his family after he tested positive for COVID-19.
Every day, when we went to go to him, he would ask us to call his son’s number, but no one would answer or call again to find out about his condition. Then, the other is that people don’t want to take or look at the corpses of their family members. We are all inspired by the great doctors who serve all over the world. I just try to give my 100 percent, in treating patients wherever I work.
—Dr Ch Prashamsa, new resident, Department of Respiratory Medicine, Gandhi Hospital
Destroy and shine
Chennai has always led the healthcare sector for years, and Hyderabad has finally been caught. The quality is more or less achieved, but in terms of quantity, we have a lot to work on! Strict implementation of governance and inclusive schemes can help serve the masses better! Health care is and should be a universal right. Although I’m not a front-line worker and a lot of greetings to those who serve, I’ve seen an increase in skin and hair concerns. Stress levels can have a huge impact on your overall well-being and your skin and hair.
Responsibility is our core responsibility to practice awareness, so we can also help others. Listen to your body, COVID-19 has taught us everything we took our immunity for granted. Your skin, hair and nails are an excellent reflection of your inner health. Don’t let stress eat away at your health, have confidence in a higher power while taking all precautions! Stay safe.
– Dr. Syed Shazia Fatima, cosmetic consulting physician
I not only treat the disease, but I also get involved with my parents
I think India has some of the best and best doctors and surgeons. Many of our corporate hospitals are equipped to deal with complex issues and some are well prepared with front technology, comparable to major global institutions. We are lagging behind in research and I wish this would change. We certainly have intellectual capital.
We are also severely deficient in our public health measures and this pandemic has maliciously exposed those lacunae. I’ve been completely at home and working with video consultations since closing. It’s not the same, but it’s definitely better than not being available. When I see my counterparts being Corona fighters and going through the fire, I have to confess that I feel a tinge of guilt about my imposed and secure reconciliation.
I was a Bombay University teacher in my college days. I then chose to be a counselor in a private pediatric practice. I have a wonderful, small practical base which makes it easy for me to be accessible 24/7. I don’t just treat the disease, but I like to get involved with parents at every level of child growth. I hope to be able to do this as long as I can. I want to be able to make a difference. I love the love I get. I really like interacting with new parents from whom I learn a lot.
During this time, include vitamins C and D, and zinc in your diet. Exercise and have an oximeter pulse, especially in homes where there are elderly people. Do not treat yourself, do not neglect the symptoms, no matter how small. The mask should be avoided for children under 18 months. Time-limited vaccines for children should not be delayed. Optional vaccines can wait. It is important that parents work hard on their mental health so that children are not negatively affected.
