Rebekah Vardy ordered to pay $1.7 million
Coleen Rooney, the wife of former England soccer captain Wayne Rooney, will receive up to 1.5 million ($1.7 million) in legal fees from the wife of one of her husband’s former team-mates after winning her case high profile for defamation, a judge has decided.
Rebekah Vardy, the wife of Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy, had sued Rooney for defamation after she was publicly accused of leaking stories about him to the media.
In July, Judge Karen Steyn ruled that Rooney, 36, had proved her claim was “substantially true” and that Vardy, 40, knew and accepted the private details that were leaked to The Sun by her agent.
On Tuesday, Vardy, who said the judge was wrong, was ordered to pay 90% of Rooney’s legal costs of around £1.67m, with £800,000 due by mid-November.
The case has captivated the public and the media with its mix of glamour, football and amateur detectives, with Rooney turned detective to find the culprit behind the leaks.
She said she blocked everyone but one person from viewing her Instagram account and then posted a series of fake stories to see if they got leaked, which they did.
“It’s… Rebekah Vardy’s account,” she posted on social media, where Rooney called her “Wagatha Christie”, a reference to the “wag” moniker given to a group of footballers’ “wives and girlfriends”.
During the trial, the court was shown text messages between Vardy and her agent, which included disparaging comments about Rooney and talk of leaking stories.
Rooney’s lawyer said Vardy deleted files and other media messages, while the agent’s phone ended up at the bottom of the North Sea after she said she accidentally threw it over the side of a boat.
“In my judgment, what takes this case out of the norm in such a way as to compel the conclusion that I should make an order for damages is that in my post-trial judgment I have found that the plaintiff [and also her former agent] had deliberately erased or destroyed evidence,” Steyn said.
