“Intelligence was not proven to me. It was proven enough to bother me. It was not proven enough for me to take it to a court of law. His comments mark the first time a Pentagon official has answered questions about US intelligence that he said were an attempt by a Russian military intelligence unit to pay the Taliban to kill US soldiers.

McKenzie said Tuesday, “I’m very familiar with this material, and I’m a theater commander and I had a chance to see it. I saw it very disturbing.”
“I just didn’t find out there was a causal link there. It bothered me and we’re taking extreme measures to protect the force all the time in Afghanistan,” McKenzie said, adding that he was not convinced that the Russian goodness program was directly responsible for the death of American personnel.
“You see a lot of clues. A lot of them are disturbing; a lot of them act. But in that case, there just weren’t enough there. I sent the intelligence guys back to keep digging it. And I believe they’re still digging now.” , “he added.
The general’s comments come as President Donald Trump continues to cast doubt on intelligence, referring to it recently as a hoax.
Trump tweeted last month that “there have not been many attacks” on US troops by Taliban fighters, as evidence that the reported revelation could be “bad.”
McKenzie warned Tuesday that the U.S. “should always remember, Russians are not our friends. They are not our friends. And they are not our friends in Afghanistan. And they don’t want us well.”
