BEIRUT (Reuters) – A UN Security Council resolution leaving only one of two border crossings open for aid shipments from Turkey to northwestern Syria held by rebels will cost lives and intensify the suffering of 1.3 million people live there, aid agencies said.

Western nations had pressured for continued access to aid through two Turkish border crossings, but Russia, a key ally of President Bashar al-Assad in its war, and China vetoed a last-ditch effort on Friday. kept both open.

“In northwestern Syria, where a cross-border vital line has been closed … it will be more difficult to reach 1.3 million people addicted to food and medicine provided by the UN border,” aid agencies said. in Syria in a joint statement.

“Many will not receive the help they need now. Lives will be lost. The suffering will intensify. ”

“In the first case of COVID-19 confirmed in Idlib, an area with a very weakened health infrastructure, this is a devastating blow,” the statement added.

In a separate statement, human rights doctors said the resolution had closed “direct routes for hundreds of thousands of displaced Syrians in dire need of food and medicine.”

Russia and China have argued that the northwest could be reached from inside Syria, that is, through government-held territory, and that aid shipments from Turkey violate Syria’s sovereignty.

“This issue should not be politicized,” said Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Dmitry Polyanskiy after the vote.

Louis Charbonneau, the UN director at Human Rights Watch, said: “Council members bowed down and gave Moscow what it wanted was a drastic reduction in cross-border aid for desperate Syrians who rely on it for survival.”
