California is again at the center of the coronavirus crisis

For Mr. Lee, the last few months have been turbulent to the extreme. He was determined to open his own business just as the pandemic won in the country, forcing closure.

Mr. Lee, who rents space to other hair stylists, did not collect any rent for the first few months of closing. Now, he is charging tenants only 35 percent of their rent, just to keep the doors open when we can get back to work.

He was allowed to open for about five weeks, starting in early June, but many of his clients stayed away, saying they feared another wave of coronavirus. They were right, I think, he said.

The salon closed again last week, and Mr. Lee was spending his time cleaning it, touching the paint on the walls, and researching business loans to help him stay afloat. I just looked at the numbers every day, hoping they’ll see them start falling, he said.

For core workers, many of whom are people of color who have faced the risk of the virus on a daily basis for months on end, the recent feeds were particularly troubling.

It’s scary, said Christina Lockyer-White, a nursing assistant at a nursing home in Kern County, who watched as dozens of patients and other staff fell ill in April. No one should go through or see what I have experienced.
