TORONTO – A recent blood donation test reveals little evidence of infection spread by the new coronavirus, scientists said on Thursday.

“We need to increase testing and tracking capacities across the country to quickly disrupt any transmission chain to prevent uncontrolled spread.

All tested samples were donated between May 9 and June 8, shortly after virus activity peaked in Canada. The series does not include any samples from Quebec, which has been the most hit province. The results from Quebec are expected to be made public “in the near future”, according to the press release from the working group.

Further nationwide data is also coming in, as the Canadian Blood Services is working on testing all 37,800 blood samples donated during May and June.

It is not yet clear how long the antibodies produced to help the body fight SARS-CoV-2 infection last. The study published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that half of the antibodies disappear within 36 days.
