The Privacy Council Office launches investigation into the workplace of the Governor-General’s office amid allegations of harassment

The Privacy Council Office (PCO) has launched what it calls a workplace investigation “complete, independent and impartial” for allegations of harassment and verbal abuse in the government office. General Julie Payette.

The investigation follows a CBCNews report citing unnamed sources saying Payette has created a toxic environment in Rideau Hall by verbally harassing employees to the point where some have shrunk to hijack the office altogether.

A dozen sources with direct knowledge of the office during Payette’s term told CBC News that the Governor-General has shouted, hired, humiliated and publicly humiliated. They accuse him of throwing legumes in the office and, in one case, throwing an employee’s job aside and calling it “shit”.

Sources also accused Payette’s secretary and longtime friend, Assunta Di Lorenzo, of harassing employees she called some “lazy” and “incompetent.”

“Harassment has no place in any professional workplace,” PCO spokesman Stphane Shank said in a statement. “It is a public service priority to advance efforts to prevent and resolve harassment issues more effectively.”

The PCO statement stated that the Governor-General’s office is part of the core public service and is subject to Treasury Board policies, which include an anti-harassment policy.

The PCOsaid office is creating the “reference conditions” of the review and will immediately take steps to hire an independent third party to perform it.

Payette said in a statement that it welcomes an independent review.

“I am deeply concerned about media reports regarding the Office of the Governor General and I am fully committed to ensuring that every employee working in the Rideau Hall enjoys a safe and healthy work environment at all times and in all circumstances. , “said Payette. “I also take workplace issues very seriously.”

The Canadian Public Utilities Alliance (PSAC) represents approximately 80 employees at Rideau Hall, including kitchen workers, cleaners and maintenance and communications staff.
